Creationism

April 1, 2006

Dear Friends,

There has been quite a lot of media coverage recently about
“Creationism” – the idea that God created the universe as
described in the Bible.

This has largely come from those who object to such views
being taught in schools alongside modern theories of the
origin of the universe. They are suggesting that a Biblical
view is too odd and will damage young people!

As Christians in a secular society we need to realize and
respect that others will have different views to us, but we
still need to be able to express what we believe is a
Biblical and credible world view.

Similarly, as we come to Holy Week (April 9th – 16th) we
will be remembering the events surrounding the death and
resurrection of Jesus. These can be described in a factual
way; Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey, then teaching
the people in the Temple and spending time with His
followers before His arrest, trial execution and conquering
of death itself. There will be those who do not share our
views, but we need to know with confidence that Jesus died
in our place to bring forgiveness to us and rose to offer
new life to those who believe in Him.

St Paul said: “If Christ has not been raised then our faith
is futile and we are still in our sin.” (1 Corinthians
15:17). Like Alfred Ackley we can say: “He lives, He lives,
Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me and talks with
me along life’s narrow way. He lives, He lives, salvation
to impart. You ask me how I know He lives, He lives within
my heart.”

As we approach Easter let us each consider how we would
express to others the truth that Jesus not only died but
rose to life and lives for ever. It may be a fact that many
would not think plausible or desirable to share with our
children but we know it is the only hope for this world and
we have a responsibility to tell others.

With warmest Christian Greetings,
Kath Pawlett
