Lessons of Life

Dear Friends,

You may at some time have read these thoughts called
“Lessons of a seventy year old”. I have chosen just a few
from a long list, some on the list are quite trivial but
others very deep.

"I've learned that making a "living" is not the same thing
as "making a life."
"I've learned that whenever I decide something with an open
heart, I usually make the right decision."
"I've learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to
be one."
"I've learned that people will forget what you said, people
will forget what you did, but people will never forget how
you made them feel."

I found some of these quite challenging and realise that
they are not just for seventy year olds!

However, the question I asked myself was not just about the
specifics of whether I had learnt these lessons but
whether, in fact, I am learning life lessons at all. There
is always the danger of saying over some issues, both
related to how we behave or to what we believe – “Well
that’s just how I am!” or “I’m happy as I am.” Although, in
one sense we may be content with our lot in life and at
peace with God, as a Christian we can never feel we are
happy to “stay where we are”. God calls us to journey on in
faith and in maturity, He wants us to grow and keep
learning about ourselves, others and especially Himself.
Therefore, it should always be our prayer to ask the Lord
what it is He wants to teach us through life’s experiences
as we see them through the filter of Scripture. So I stand
with the writer of the lessons who also said, "I've learned
that I still have a lot to learn."
