Church Life
September 4, 2008
Dear Friends,
As we stood in the Church Car-Park after the August Wholeness and Healing Service a flock of geese flew low over the Church, they were in that distinctive and familiar V-shaped formation. (I now know that is officially called a Wedge!) It not only looks impressive but serves some very important purposes: • It conserves energy enabling the flock to fly much longer distances together in migration than they would be able to alone. In fact they have a 72% greater flying range! Each bird is slightly above the bird in front, resulting in less wind resistance • As the geese take it in turns to fly at the front, it means they can fall back when tired and let others take the lead, so the whole group can fly longer and further • The V-formation makes it easier to keep track of one another and so be aware of each others needs, - Fighter Pilots have a similar Formation for the same reason. If a goose is sick or wounded, two others from the Formation stop with it to protect and care for it.
This is such a wonderful illustration of a good pattern of Church life – all sharing a common direction, moving with purpose and helping one another so that we are all more effective. Although we have thought of this before, I felt that it was a very special picture from the Lord, for us as a Church, at this present time. We are seeking to move forward and we so much want to help and support one another. We need everyone to have the vision of when to rest and be supported by others, and when to move forward and relieve others of the burdens they have been carrying.
One fact that I had not realised was that when geese “Honk” it is an encouragement to keep up speed and direction. So “Honk, Honk” to you all, - lets keep flying and especially in September with the special events that you will find included in the Newsletter under our Church Life Section
God Bless you With warmest Christian Greetings Kath
