Trust

October 4, 2008

Dear Friends,

I read recently the story of a “shabby-looking man” at King’s Cross in Sydney, Australia who approached people and asked them a simple question; “If you died tonight where would you spend eternity?” That is perhaps not something we would immediately spend our time saying to strangers but this man said, “I was a drunk before I came to Jesus. I’m uneducated, I don’t speak well and all I could think of was to go around asking people that question.” He explained that to a gentleman who returned to the city several years later to tell him how he had been haunted by the question he had been asked and had come to put his trust in Jesus and had discovered that others had too. This was a tremendous encouragement to the “shabby-looking man” who had been there eight years and had never had any indication that it was making a difference.

The details of the story may leave us with some questions but what it does say to us is that, doing what we can and entrusting it to God can really make a difference. That is certainly true about speaking of God’s love but also true when we give a little time or money or interest or prayer or… We may wonder if it makes a difference but we must be encouraged that God can and does use little things in big way.

I would like to commend to you the “Daniel Week of Prayer” that you will find advertised later in the Newsletter. This is an opportunity to join with Christians from all over the Sevenoaks area to pray together. Each day there is a different focus for our praying and especially at this time, when many people are feeling unsure and insecure about the future, there if a great need to pray for our area. Do pop in even if only for a short while – as we have just been saying, even a little can make a difference.

On a personal note, Brian joins me in saying what a privilege it is to be part of the Church family here in Otford and to be invited to continue to serve here. We are aware that changes in Methodism and in the society around us will present many challenges to us as a community but as the words of our annual Covenant Service says “the power to do all these things is given us in Christ who strengthens us”.

With warmest Christian Greetings
God Bless you, Kath
