Leaders

February 1, 2009

Dear Friends,

I am writing my contribution to the Newsletter on a day that will go down in history as significant for the United States of America and indeed for the whole world. Barack Obama has been inaugurated as the 44th President of America. One man represents something much greater than himself, as he has become the focus for change in America especially regarding the equality of all people from every racial and social background. This is a large burden for one man to carry and we are called to support Barack Obama in prayer.

Indeed the New Testament encourages us to pray for all our earthly leaders, “Pray for rulers and for all who have authority so that we can have quiet and peachful lives full of worship and respect for God” 1 Timothy 2:2. You may ask “What shall we pray for the?” and this is an outline that was passed on to me just prior to the Inauguration. Prays for:

Protection. I believe there were 45,000 police and military on duty so Protection was high on the agenda. However, as well as physical protection - which is very important – there is also the spiritual protection, John 17:15 “keep them safe from the evil one”.

Wisdom: All leaders are facing very difficult situations at this time and need special insight and wisdom in guiding others. “If anyone needs wisdom, you should ask God for it.” James 1:5.

Reverence: “Wisdom begins with respect for the Lord” Psalm 111:10. Humility for those in high office is a sign of great character which others will follow.

Strength: Much sustained strength will be needed for the weeks and months ahead. I pray that the God of peace will give you every good thing you need so you can do what he wants. Hebrews 13:20.

In a culture and at a time when our leaders are so often criticized let us pray for those with such responsibilities and seek to take responsibility in our own lives for those things we are called to do and so contribute to the greater needs of society.

On a personal note, Brian has asked me to express his appreciation at many thoughts and prayers concerning the recent death of his mother. Dorothy enjoyed the friendship and fellowship of our Church Family here at Otford over Christmas and New Year and was always interested in news of what was happening.

With warmest Christian Greetings
God Bless you, Kath
