Another Decade

February 1, 2010

Dear Friends,

January 2010 will be remembered for making a snowy start to a new decade. It is also a time to reflect, not only on the last year, but the whole decade which has passed so quickly.

I recall saying as we entered the 21st Century that we would always remember what we were doing at the historic Millennium Moment and that children yet unborn would one day ask us about it. The Millennium Babies are now in their tenth year and have passed through a decade of change, though they are less aware of it than their parents and grandparents.

The “Noughties” as these years have been called, have not only been dominated by amazing technological advance but also by much more subtle changes in the family and society. These changes challenge us to be strong in our understanding of the TRUTH revealed to us in Jesus, which many would seek to undermine, but also to be adaptable in how we present that truth in a way that is seen to be relevant to the 21st Century generation. This is no easy task, but we are called to persevere, knowing that God will bless our faithfulness.

Another Decade also makes us realize that life is relatively short, even if statistically we are living longer. Therefore, we need to make the most of the gifts and opportunities that God has given us. In a busy world we need to make room, individually and collectively, to share with the Psalmist who heard the voice of the Lord; “Be still and know that I am God”.

It is a great joy to us that Sue Ward has now completed her Local Preacher’s Training and will be received onto “Full Plan” as an accredited Preacher. There will be a special Circuit service to mark this on Sunday March 21st at Otford at 6.30pm, when we will also rejoice that Robert Bright, from The Drive Church, has served as a Local Preacher for 50 years. Bless you Sue in all you do in the Lord’s Service.

It was also a joy to us that Gill Le Boutillier–Scott has accepted the invitation to serve as a half-time Minister in our Circuit from September when Peter Hills retires. Gill and her husband Robin have a young daughter, Isabella. She is originally from Guernsey and at present is a Minister in the Sutton Coalfield area. She will largely be working at the Drive and Weald and we hope to appoint a lay-person to work alongside her.

These, and so many other small things that we see everyday remind us that God is very much alive and at work in the 21st Century. The Psalmist said; “A thousand years to you are like one day; they are like yesterday, already gone, like a short hour in the night” ( Psalm 90:4). He holds all time in His hands and we are thankful for that knowledge.

With warmest Christian Greetings
God Bless you,
Kath
