From our Minister

In meditating on scripture, one of my most profound experiences each year is as I reflect on the Good Friday account and the disciples as they experienced the events we read about.

Jesus taken by force in the Garden of Gethsemane. Betrayed by one of their friends, Judas: when Jesus at the table said ‘One of you will betray me’ no one looked at Judas, no one hinted it would be him. Jesus being questioned by Pilate and the crowds screaming for him to be crucified. Seeing him after the scourging, blood soaking into his clothing, patches where his hair and beard had been torn out. The awareness that they ran away and in his moment of greatest need abandoned him;
Peter knowing he denied even knowing Jesus. Then the news that Judas had committed suicide.

Were they able to sleep? How did they spend that first Good Friday evening, or the Saturday? All hopes and expectations of Jesus and his Kingdom dashed; were they safe, would the authorities come after them?

Apologies if this is all a bit graphic, but it his how my mind works when I meditate, I try to be there.

We know how everything works out, so we are freed from that awful terror and horror but we do all experience moments when everything starts to fall apart; or unexpected problems strike. At such time it is good to read the Psalms and be reminded who we belong to, and who we trust. I find the message of psalm 62 helpful in troubled times;

Yes, my soul, find rest in God;
my hope comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honour depend on God;
he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Trust in him at all times, you people;
pour out your hearts to him,
for God is our refuge.

As someone who naturally does not pour out my heart to anyone, but usually keeps everything locked safely away inside. The message of vs 8 pokes at me like an irritating friend who won’t let me ignore him.

Trust in him
At all times
Pour out your heart to him
God is our refuge

Then I experience vs 6; I am able to rest in him and I look to the future with a renewed hope; whatever is happening today.

We live in a troubled world but God is sovereign.
